Bringing Back the Long Run

I am running the Rehoboth Beach Half Marathon this coming weekend on December 5th.

I have been struggling with a lingering knee issue for the past 9 months but after completing 5 weeks of  PT, I was able to get back to my regular running.  I decided, albeit hastily, that now was a good a time as any to run another half marathon.

I ran this same half marathon it back in 2010 as part of my marathon training.  The course is beautiful.

I felt that I had a pretty good half marathon base so I just incorporated a long run on Saturdays into my training.

I started out a few weeks ago with a 9 mile long run and have progressed to 12 miles.

All of my running has been on the treadmill (per the advice of my physical therapist) to hopefully keep me injury free.

Yesterday, I did my last 12 miler with the help of an audiobook, The Orphan Train.  I have never listened to an audiobook, but I was reading the book at home before my run and simply couldn’t put it down!

I listened to it for the first hour of my run and it did help make the time go by quickly. I switched to music for the second portion of my run.

All in all, I was happy with how it went.

Here is what it looked like-

1st portion-7.26 miles in 60 minutes average pace 8:16/mile

2nd portion-4.75 miles in 38 min 46 sec average pace 8:10/mile

12 miler the week prior was done in 1 hour 42 minutes.

Hopefully these times will translate to the road but we shall see!  Initially they were saying 50 degrees and showers but now there is only a 10% chance of rain!
